The China Study - Review
I have read a small number of books on diet and nutrition. A casual glance at any health section overwhelms me secrets guaranteed to help me lose weight and look like a super model. I don’t really want to look like a supermodel; but I do want to be healthy. That is why T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study caught my eye. The book describes the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and the startling implications for diet, weight loss, and long term health. It seemed like an ambitious work from a credible source so I had a read. The book describes a study where a vast number of Chinese citizens were surveyed over a number of years. The results reveal that a whole food plant based diet result in better health. This is an oversimplification of Campbell’s work but serves to express the central point of his work.
Each chapter builds on the idea of health through vegetarian eating and sickness through the consumption of animal based foods. Campbell is as qualified as it gets having conducted the very types of studies cited in many reports over the course of decades.
I would recommend reading this book. It is interesting and convincing. I don’t know if I am willing to cave on my carnivorous consumption, but I will consider eating more vegetables and less meat. If you are interested in the topics of nutrition or vegetarianism then this would be a good place to start.
