Prepared for Today

So much of my work is spent preparing for tomorrow. I study for the upcoming test. I save for the upcoming expense. I train for the upcoming race. As a Christian, I tend to live my spiritual life in this way. I study the Bible today because tomorrow I might need it. I fast and pray because tomorrow I might need to depend on God’s strength instead of my own. I worship now because soon God will appreciate my adoration.

However, I am realizing that all of my preparation is not for tomorrow but for today. The spiritual race I have been preparing to run has already begun. The starting gun has gone off and the path of preparation is really the path of competition. My prayers matter for the now. My obedience too. Everything I have been doing in preparation for tomorrow is shaping me today.

All of my preparation is for today.

You too are already running the race set out before you. Your training is not training at all. Your current preparation is actually your performance. The challenges that you will face “some day” are already here. I think that if we shift our mindset from “prepared for tomorrow” to “prepared for today'“ we will take ourselves, our spiritual selves, more seriously.

What spiritual race are you already running. What training have you mistakenly postponed for tomorrow?
