Have You Met Generation Z?

We characterize groups of young adults by a series of shared traits. These "generations" become an influential means by which we interact with emerging culture and trends. We give them names like Builder, Boomer, or Generation X. Those who work with families today have been learning the nuances of a generation of Millennials. This cohort of young adults were be born in the early 1980's through 2000. They are populate your high schools, are starting to graduate from college, and may be putting kids in your nursery. But what comes next? What type of kids will these up-and-comers be having? Introducing Generation Z.

Introducing Generation Z

Is it too early to determine what characteristics this next generation of young adults will embody? Perhaps. Is it too early to notice their interpretation of the world? Certainly not. Marketing groups have begun to target these young people who are growing up in a world very different than the one before. Consider the shifts that have taken place sense September 11th, 2001. The World Trade Centers of Manhattan served as an epicenter of change for the entire world. So how will these young adults be different? A marketing group called Marketo created an interesting info graph describing the cultural realities of this next generation. You can find their original post here; I have also attached it below. But first, let me share a few highlights from the text.

  • More than 25% of today's population belongs to Generation Z.
  • Generation Z are self educations and read "digital" natively.
  • They are altruistic and entrepreneurial.
  • They employ more digital screens than any previous generation.
  • Less than 25% of secondary students even look at Facebook.
  • They communicate visually and in short bursts.
