Reggie McNeal's A Work of Heart describes the process by which God shapes spiritual leaders. It is a thoughtful examination of the call to ministry and the process of ministerial sanctification. McNeal begins with a survey of famous biblical leaders and how God called and shaped their lives to be useful for his purposes. Moses, David, Paul, and Jesus are called of God and prepare to do his will in unique ways. The second part of the book defines God's shaping work in six parts and provides reflection points for the reader. McNeal is a good writer and is able to mix the narrative of biblical characters with an exposition of ideas. The two are related in convincing ways. His discussion on the shaping call of Jesus is provocative and persuasive. The overall tone is very pastoral and you can feel Reggie's empathy for the reader on each page.

I would recommend reading this book if you are a pastor. It is a great way to be reminded of our own weaknesses and how God desires to continue to make us more like Jesus. It moves quickly and simply. The ideas are thoughtful but simple and create a great environment for reflection.
