Ephesian Leadership Theology – Part 1

intropart 1part 2part 3 - part 4

Driven by the Spirit.

Leaders should be driven by the Spirit. No other source of motivation can direct as clearly. Paul tells the Ephesian church to seek the filling of the Spirit instead of seeking the things of this world.[1] Leadership skills can be attained through a variety of tools today. There are many classes one can attend and many books one can read. These resources may be useful for the leadership but there is no substitute for the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit draws the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher close to Christ so that they may prepare God’s people for works of service. The Spirit also produces a peace by which all of creation can be united as one. This unity is crucial for the church to be able to move forward as one body.

Radical Together: a Review

David Platt hits us again with Radical Together as a follow up book for his freshman title Radical. The focus has shifted from personal life to corporate life as we examine the move of God in the local church. No one can do it alone and God intends to use His church as an instrument of change. Platt examines six ideas to help the church accomplish the purpose of God.

Platt zeros in on the dysfunction of church culture. He highlights some common misconceptions about the “good” church and the function of a pastoral staff. We must be willing to make sacrifices for those things which are most important and equip the lay person to fulfill the purpose of God. Platt shares the idea of being saved from work to work. This is to say that the grace of God has given us the freedom to do good works in His name. There is also a strong belief in the power of the word of God. Platt believes that the church can overlook the inherit message of Christ in search of personal revelation. The fifth chapter of Radical Together focuses on the idea of making sacrifices to reach the world for Christ. David Platt describes unreached groups of people who have never had a chance to receive the message of Christ and how each church may be uniquely gifted to take the gospel in places that it has never been before.

If you liked Radical then I would recommend picking up Radical Together. Platt has published a second book that could have easily been included in the first. It is short and sweet and as personal as ever. At times it feels like a collection of random ideas associated with a broader church culture. If you are looking for a specific strategy for mobilizing your church in the name of Radical then this is not your book. Platt says as much in the opening chapter. However, if you are looking to be motivated to do something as a part of a church then have a go at Radical Together.

Ephesian Leadership Theology – Intro

intropart 1part 2part 3 - part 4

I want to share some thoughts about leadership, theology and Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church. Over these next few days I am going to post a series of thoughts about the topic. I will link each part above so you can track with me. I hope these ideas are encouraging to you as a Jesus follower.

Paul has expressed a clear doctrine of the Holy Spirit, Christ, unity and maturity through service. The book of Ephesians is not limited to these four topics but they emerge as the key elements of a theology of leadership. The passage found in Eph. 4.11 outlines the different leadership roles within the church. These roles are an ordained gift of Christ and received by grace.[1] Each one should be driven by the Spirit, centered on Christ, united as one body for the purpose of maturity.

Some Core Values

the core

I was thinking about my core values. Have you ever asked yourself which ideas you are not willing to budge on? We all have them, don’t we? My first pass at a list is short but I would like to throw them out there. What do you think? What would you add or change?

1. The Bible is God’s word and the foundation of my faith. I believe that it is true and the starting point for anyone who wishes to follow Christ. The Bible tells one story of God’s love from the beginning. Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s love for us in all of scripture and all of time.
2. Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s love for us. His sacrifice has provided the human race with the only way to God. Everyone needs to know about Jesus because Jesus loves and everyone.
3. Worship is the way I reciprocate God’s love. I worship God by lifting him up for the world to see. I worship in the way I treat myself, my family and others. God will be lifted up through my behavior. I set aside times to explicitly worship God for how awesome he is.
4. Service is the best way for me to express my core values. My values can be written and read but they are better seen first hand. This is the way in which I will engage my culture.
